Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Corals are marine organisms in class Anthozoa of phylum Cnidaria typically living in compact colonies of many identical individual "polyps." The group includes the important reef builders that inhabit tropical oceans, which secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton. Corals can be perforate or imperforate. Perforate corals have porous skeletons, which allow their polyps to connect with each other through the skeleton. Imperforate corals have hard solid skeletons. Corals can be major contributors to the physical structure of the coral reefs that develop in tropical and subtropical waters, such as the enormous Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia. This book studies corals including blue corals, brain corals, pillar corals, black corals, sea pens, coral bleaching, and white pox disease. Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Project Webster continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge. Less
