The majority of African Americans go to historic black churches. Black church refers to churches which minister predominantly African American congregations. Black congregations were first established by freed slaves at the end of the 17th century, and later when slavery was abolished more African Americans were allowed to create a unique form of Christianity that was culturally influenced by African spiritual traditions. This book studies African American religion including the First African Baptist Church, the Trinity United Church of Christ, Black Power, and the Commandment Keepers.
