‘Apple Picking Season’A short storyByGreg hoeyCopyright 1998Published & Distributed by SmashwordsIt was the early nineties, two hustlers of sorts myself and an American gal named Carole who was intent on not going back to her homeland anyway she could, that included marriage if she could possibly get anyone drunk enough to oblige. She was not an unattractive girl in fact she was sex on a stick although, she was prone to the bottle and had a history probably best left untold back in her former hometown of LA.We met up in an old traveller’s hostel back in Perth filled with nasty euro’s and brit traveller’s hell bent on a binge fest over travel it seemed. We decided to get out of the rat of a place by sharing expenses on a trip down south in order to find work and escape the city. I knew of the fruit-picking season just about to begin down in that part of the world.Principally in some pretty, little village of the coast a bit and more toward the hinterlands where the tall forest grows. Shady, peaceful, cheap bliss. Any way on duly arriving at our destination of choice, we found gainful employment in less than a day having visited about a dozen farms in the area until we finally our dice rolled true.Our new employer was out on a rather large apple farm in the quite lovely, pastoral, bucolic, pleasantness common for much of the countryside in and around the tiny town of Balingup, some due west by some twenty or so kilometres away from where we had set up camp in the larger town of Donnybrook.
