Highly Recommended! In short, a really good read. Meredith deserves his reputation-- both for his skill and for the effort needed to enjoy the work. Meredith was purported to have said, âhe is all of usâ of the main character in his most enduring novel, The Egoist, published in 1879. The novel tells the âtragicomicalâ story of Sir Willoughby Patteneâs single-minded pursuit of a marriageable woman. Sympathy, however, lies with Clara Middleton, one of Patteneâs choices, and how this Victorian woman use her strength of will to break off an unwelcome engagement.
