He covered rebels in Africa, civil wars in Indochina, peace talks in the Middle East, and scandal in the White House. Not all of it was grim and daring. There was time for humor, compassion, even romance along the way.

Central Africa was his first assignment as a foreign correspondent and the 1965 coup d''etat in the Congo was the first of many abrupt regime changes he reported from the scene. Others included Watergate and President Richard Nixon''s fall from power. During the 1970s,he covered the recurring chaos in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
