Hermann Hermann is sick of the drudgery of everyday life and decides it's time to end it all. But he doesn't really want to kill himself; he just wants it to look as if he's been murdered and then he can quietly slip away into the shadows and do as he pleases. It's a great plan, except he's not much of a criminal and his plans go wildly astray. Both witty and sardonic, Vladimir Nabokov's Despair is a comedy of errors with a little philosophy and human suffering thrown in.
