'Mesmerism' is another word for 'Animal Magnetism', coined by British magnetizers in an attempt to distance themselves from animal magnetism, which revolved around the idea of 'magnetic fluid'. Hypnosis arose from mesmerism, and was a practice described by the surgeon James Braid as being 'rational mesmerism'.
