Philosophy in Korea is difficult to separate from religion. Two thousand years ago, traditional Korean philosophy encompassed Shamanism and Taoism and evolved into Korean Buddhism and the strong influence of Confucianism. This book explores the journey of Korean philosophical thought through the ages with a specific focus on the Joseon Period which was divided into two schools of thought: principles versus force. Also included are the leading philosophers and religious figures of the time and discussion about the official state ideology of North Korea called Juche.
