June 1997 John Lescroart (pronounced Less-kwa), author of The 13th Juror and A Certain Justice, now brings us a suspenseful, passionate, page-turning story that provides both penetrating insights into the inner workings of a criminal investigation and a riveting exploration of the nature of guilt and innocence. Mark Dooher, a prosperous attorney and prominent representative of San Francisco's Catholic Church, is the last person anyone would suspect of a savage murder -- especially the brutal, bloody killing of his own wife. But as the head of a powerful law firm, he has always gotten his way, and when his path crosses that of the beautiful young Christina Carrera, it's clear that she's what he wants most. There's one problem, of course -- his wife. As legal counsel for the city's Archdiocese and a prominent Catholic, Dooher cannot get a divorce. So when his wife is murdered in an apparent burglary, Dooher is apparently free -- but he's also the prime suspect of veteran San Francisco detective Abe Glitsky. Glitsky, whose wife is dying of cancer and whose young sons are suffering from this protracted loss, puts aside his own grief, finds holes in Dooher's story and presses for a murder charge against the attorney. Dooher remains confident, however; with the woman he wants by his side, his best friend, Wes Farrell as his defense attorney, and the Catholic Church behind him, it seems that nothing can get in his way. Except, perhaps, the truth.
