This is the second of the Barbara and Dominic series of novels. Admiration of finely carved ivory statues while on a short vacation in Lipari, prompts an unsatisfactory explanation of their lightly documented provenance by the respected Rome based art dealer Mr. Argoni, who is equally skeptical of the seller's tale. He requests the assistance of EACD officers Barbara and Dominic Swartz to document the origin of the pieces and the actual suppliers. As the young art majors have previously discovered the criminal art world is well financed, deeply embedded in society's inner workings and interconnected across countries, ethnicities and continents; while also being highly protective of their enterprise and internally competitive. Their investigation leads them to South Africa tracing theivory, diamonds and gold smugglers. While trailing a cargo ship with contraband headed for the Po River delta they trespass on the turf of an entrenched criminal organization exporting art, jewels and high end Italian textiles to the newly affluent Asian market.
