Indian classical dance is a relatively new umbrella term for various codified art forms rooted in natya, the sacred Hindu musical theatre styles. The Sangeet Natak Akademi currently confers classical status on eight Indian dance styles. Out of the eight styles, the only two temple dance styles that have their origin in natya shastra are Bharatanatyam and Odissi. Kathak originated as a temple dance, but the style gradually changed during the Mughal period under the influence of Persian dance. Intricate footwork and spins, as well as abhinaya, are the highlights of Kathak. Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam are relatively recent forms. This book studies the various forms of Indian classical dance including the natya shastra, abhinaya, varnam, ghungroo, and Odissi music.
