Sister Mona, a whimsical young nun, has been questioning her place among the rigid Benedictine Sisters. When she is given a two-week summer assignment to teach catechism at a small parish in Kelliher, Minnesota, Sr. Mona is taken aback by the brusqueness of the parish priest's letter of greeting: Up here, it is all work and no play. Never one to accept no fun as an option, Sr. Mona is determined to make the best of her summer adventure. Father Piet Aarden is a well-loved priest, with a sometimes-mischievous sense of humor. Originally from Holland, Fr. Aarden had come to the United States at the age of twenty-one, a man of courage and determination. After fifteen years as a priest, he finds himself increasingly dissatisfied with the demands of a conservative bishop that trump his desire to help his parishioners. As the lives of these two unique and irregular people intersect during the summer of 1969, two individuals who have struggled to reconcile their vocational doubts will find the answers to their questions in the most unlikely of places: Each other.
