Lava is molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption. This molten rock is formed in the interior of some planets, including Earth, and some of their satellites. Igneous rocks, which forms lava flows when the volcano erupts, can be classified into three chemical types; felsic, intermediate, and mafic. These classes are primarily chemical; however, the chemistry of lava also tends to correlate with the magma's temperature, its viscosity and its mode of eruption. This book studies the composition of lava including silicate minerals, felsite, volcanic rock, flood basalt, and pillow lava.
