A Celebration of and a Dedication to Friendship The story Legacy of the Iron Moon is an intriguing web of people and events that has at its core a tragic accident. On May 4, 1962, a 15-year-old high school student, walking along the gravel siding of railroad tracks, was struck and killed by a passenger train on Long Island, New York. In 2010, a dozen classmates reconnect after nearly fifty years to begin their efforts to commemorate the death of one of their own a half-century earlier. Their reminiscences reflect how their lives have been affected by the death of their friend and by the turbulent culture shifts of the 1960s when they were onlookers to a whirlwind of international and national developments: Vietnam; JFK; new avenues in literature and motion pictures; assassinations of prominent and celebrated personages; the continuing proliferation of rock 'n' roll; space flight; Civil Rights; the escalating Cold War; the first music from Dylan and The Beatles; medical advances; the Peace Corps; the Bay of Pigs; and, other remarkable phenomena.
