Paul Celan (23 Nov 1920 – 20 April 1970) is widely considered to be one of the most innovative poets of the twentieth century. A German-speaking Jew, he was sent to a forced labor camp during World War II. Celan settled in Paris in 1948, where he lived and wrote until his death. Based on the reception of his work, it could be suggested that Celan is one of the most significant German poets who ever lived. Many contemporary philosophers, including Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida, Hans-Georg Gadamer and others have devoted at least one of their books to his writing.
