He used his full name in his engineering career and Nevil Shute as his pen name to protect his engineering career from inferences by his employers or fellow engineers that he was not a serious person or from potential negative publicity in connection with his publishing. his first novel, Marazan in 1926,Pied Piper (1942), No Highway (1948), A Town Like Alice (1950) and On the Beach (1957)
