Opus nigrum, una vieja fórmula alquímica para la obtención de la Gran Obra y que también simboliza las pruebas del espíritu en su proceso de liberación, es el título elegido por Marguerite Yourcenar para trazar la vida de Zenón, personaje inspirado en el químico alemán Paracelso, el médico español Miguel Servet, el filósofo italiano Tommaso Campanella y Leonardo da Vinci.

Opus Nigrum / The Abyss, an old alchemic formula for the Masterpiece which also symbolizes the evidence of the spirit in its process of liberation, is the title selected by Marguerite Yourcenar to outline the life of Zenon, a character inspired by the German chemist Paracelso, the Spanish doctor Miguel Servet, the Italian philosopher Tommaso Campanella, and Leonardo da Vinci.
