Paul Garrett, dean of American winemakers in the first two decades of the 20th century, became a multimillionaire making and selling wine. Garrett chose for his wine the name Virginia Dare. By 1919, he owned 17 plants processing grape juice or wine with a capacity of 10 million gallons in the States of California, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia. With the advent of Prohibition, Garrett could have retired a multimillionaire but held on to his wine empire, not believing that Prohibition would last. When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, he was the only vintner capable of selling wine in every Wet State. He was a spokesman for winegrape growers and winemakers. Garrett's theme was "American wine for Americans."
