The concept of mind has emerged as one of the most important in contemporary philosophy. From antiquity and the time of its modern rebirth in the seventeenth century to its prominence in recent thought, the philosophy of mind has gained increasing attention through a convergence of interests. Scientific discoveries in behavioral, neurophysiological, and cognitive psychology, the information sciences, and artificial intelligence have encourage an array of innovative theories of mind. It has been recognized at the same time that investigation in such diverse areas as logic and philosophy of mathematics, semantics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics depend on a satisfactory understanding of the nature of mind.
