“Reuben and Rachel” was written shortly after the 300th anniversary of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Americas. It was written in two volumes and is a fictional account of Columbus and his descendents from before his first voyage to the then current century. The first volume traces Columbus and his descendents as they struggle against physical hardships, personal tragedies and social mores of their days to build lives in both the new world and the old. It ends with the birth of the brother and sister twins, Reuben and Rachel. The second volume tells the stories of their hardships, tragedies, romance and triumph, again spanning from the old world to the new.In her Preface, Mrs. Rowson explains she wrote “Reuben and Rachel” to help instill in her readers an appreciation of the personal histories that helped build the new nation. She wrote it for girls and women, explaining that the majority of books then written seemed targeted for male audiences. She also wrote to help instill her ideals of upstanding moral character in her audience.Susanna Rowson (1762–1824) was a British-American novelist, poet, playwright, religious writer, stage actress and educator. The cover picture is “Brother and Sister” by Abbot Handerson Thayer.
