Recently widowed, Janie LaMarche is torn by grief and relentless anger. But her mourning is disrupted by the arrival of a builder with a contract to add a porch to her house. Stunned, Janie realized it was meant to be a surprise from her husband- now his last gift to her. As construction begins, Janie clings to the familiar: mothering her kids, avoiding loved ones, and stewing in rage. Yet her self-imposed isolation is breached by unlikely interventionists: her ipecac-toting aunt, her bossy overmanicured neighbor; her muffin-bearing cousin, and even the contractor, with his own private grief.
