State terrorism refers to acts of terrorism conducted by governments. The definitions of "terrorism," "state-sponsored terrorism," and "state terrorism" remain without international consensus. State-sponsored terrorism is a term used to describe terrorism sponsored by nation-states. As with terrorism, the precise definition and the identification of particular examples are subjects of heated political dispute. In general, state-sponsored terrorism is associated with para-militaries. It is also frequently used in conjunction with state terrorism, which is an accusation of terrorism committed by governments. This book studies state involvement in terrorism including the Iran hostage crisis, Red Terror, the Great Purge, 1958 riots in Ceylon, and the Indonesian killings of 1965-1966.
