Born into a family of doctors, with a birth defect no one knew how to treat, Earl owen was given a huge dose of radiation. As he grew, he walked with a limp, and when he was eleven he endured a year of excruciating operations in an attempt to remedy his profoundly damaged leg. He decided he would one day become an outstanding surgeon, one who would deal sensitively with his patients and cure them with the least pain possible. In his youth Earl owen was also a talented musician, and eventually he had to decide whether to pursue a career as a concert pianist or a surgeon. He chose the latter, and went on to become a pioneer of microsurgery, designing his own instruments for his operations, and co-leading the team that completed the first successful hand transplant. He was the first to reverse vasectomies and complete fallopian tube ligatures in microsurgical procedures. He has invented many different chairs and pens, and designed the seating in the Sydney opera House. He has operated and run microsurgical workshops in more than thirty countries and created Sydney's Microsearch Foundation. He has done more in his life than most of us could dream of, and this is his story. Book jacket. Less
