Henry Timothy Tilley was born in 1853, second son of John Round Tilley, a wealthy industrialist in the leather business based at Smethwick, and his wife Mary (née Round). He was educated at Worcester Cathedral School and Caius College, Cambridge, and was ordained in 1879.
He served as curate at Pershore, Moseley and Smethwick, and in 1892 was inducted as the first vicar of the new church of St. Mary's, Bearwood, Smethwick, whose construction had been financed largely by donations from his father. He married Julia Adkins, of Lightwood, but the marriage produced no children.
In 1902, he left Smethwick to take up the post of Vicar of Claverdon, where the patron of the living was (coincidentally?) Archdeacon Walters, father of his co-author.
