Edward James Hughes OM OBE FRSL (17 Aug 1930 – 28 Oct 1998) was an English poet, translator, and children's writer. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). Critics frequently rank him as one of the best poets of his generation and one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1984 and held the office until his death. In 2008 The Times ranked Hughes fourth on their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
