Many hundreds of years ago at what is now the village of Neskowin, the ground gave way and dropped straight down below the level of the sea. Ocean and sand rushed in surrounding the lower trunks of the trees. Over time the tops broke off and drifted away. The stumps have remained preserved under the sand, sometimes completely covered, sometimes showing above. Everyone who lived in, or regularly visited Neskowin knew of this occasionally appearing stump forest.Just before the millennium a particularly vigorous winter storm gathered up much of the sand in Neskowin and deposited it north in Pacific City. The stumps had a dramatic uncovering. A highly mistaken news report was sent out to the nation that these stumps had been hidden for 2000 years - last seen by anybody when Jesus was walking the earth!!!On the strength of this report hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people flocked to Neskowin to see this admittedly beautiful and fascinating stump-filled beach. Locals came to see the unusual reveal. Others - pilgrims, if you will - came searching for millennial meaning. Into this world of Neskowin Ghost Forest misperception and fun I offer an illustrated, short, (possibly true?), alternative explanation.
