Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pregnancy is the carrying of one or more offspring, known as a fetus or embryo, inside the womb of a female. In a pregnancy, there can be multiple gestations, as in the case of twins or triplets. Human pregnancy is the most studied of all mammalian pregnancies. Childbirth usually occurs about 38 weeks after conception; i.e., approximately 40 weeks from the last normal menstrual period (LNMP) in humans. Prenatal defines the period occurring "around the time of birth," specifically from 22 completed weeks of gestation to 7 completed days after birth. The postnatal period begins immediately after the birth of a child and then extends for about six weeks. During this period, the mother's body returns to pre-pregnancy conditions as far as uterus size and hormone levels are concerned. This book studies the process of pregnancy and childbirth including placenta, gestational age, nutrition and pregnancy, midwifery, nesting instinct, and water birth. Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Project Webster continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge. Less
