The Gatch family came to Maryland as indentured servants early in the eighteenth century. Led by Philip in the third generation, the family converted from established Anglicanism to Methodism in the 1770s. As a circuit rider, Philip was in Virginia during the American Revolution and led an effort to establish an independent Methodist Church. An abolitionist, he moved his family to slave-free Ohio in 1798 where he became a leader in the community and the church. This publication follows the religious and occupational history of the family through the following centuries as well as the change in the town from a rural farming community to that of urban life and culture.
