Honor de Balzac is considered the founder of social realism. Balzac was the first writer to write so completely about the social scene in France. His vast collection of works encompasses the Restoration period and the July Monarchy. The Celibates includes the novels Pierrette, The Vicar of Tours, and The Two Brothers. In all three books bachelors and old maids are the heroines. The Vicar of Tours and The Two Brothers are considered some of Balzac's finest works. Less
