Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes was first written as a short story in the year 1958, but the author expanded it and wrote the complete novel in the year 1966. The short story version was first published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. The story was the winner of the Hugo Award for Best Sort Story in the year 1960. The novel was equally admired and it was the joint winner of Nebula Award for Best Novel in the year 1966. Algernon happens to be a laboratory mouse. A surgical operation is performed on that mouse to increase his intelligence by artificial methods.
