The elegance of the Cote d'Azur in the 'Roaring Twenties' provides a backdrop of glamour, greed and excitement. The novel is set on the reaches of the River Thames in East London and also where the sun meets the sky on the French Riviera. This is at a time between the two world wars when hedonism meets the murky underworld of The Mafia and drug dealers and when espionage tiptoes on the fringes of normal lives. When Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Bisto discovers a 'stiff' going solo down the River Thames he is drawn into the murky depths of espionage and murder. Hermione Hush, paramour and secret agent, is kidnapped. Bisto then mysteriously finds himself reporting to the paymasters of the secret services and becomes obsessed with rescuing Hermione from the clutches of the Mafia. He embarks upon an adventurous and often hilarious journey down to the South of France accompanied by Pierre Velo, his curious cycling companion, and his junior detective, Jack Somers together with a mad dog called Digo! On the journey they find themselves risking their lives on land and sea in a world of double dealing, mystery and intrigue.
