Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams were both indispensible to the start and success of the American Revolution and Republic. However, they differed greatly regarding religion. After Thomas Paine wrote The Age of Reason which promoted belief in God based only on reason and Nature and rejected Christianity, Judaism and Islam as well as the Bible and Quran, Thomas Paine was attacked by clergy and politicians alike. His friend Sam Adams wrote him a letter saying he was sorry to hear that Paine had become an infidel/Atheist. Paine wrote back to Adams a very moving and inspiring letter making clear he was NOT an Atheist/infidel but was a Deist. His letter also covers topics such as prayer and the very important difference between God and religion.
