G I Had Fun, first published in 1945, is the inspiring World War Two account by major-league baseball player and coach Al Schacht. Schacht, known as the “Clown Prince of Baseball” for his hilarious antics, entertained thousands of troops in North Africa, Sicily, and the South Pacific on several USO tours. As the book’s jacket states, G I Had Fun is written “not as a comic trying to put over a gag, but as a humble human being who has been deeply moved by what he has seen. There is a depth of sincerity and feeling, as well as humor, that is wholly honest.” To the GI far from home, his efforts were much enjoyed and appreciated, and an important boost to the men’s morale.
