Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by French authors Emile Erckmann (1822-99) and Alexandre Chatrian (1826-90), nearly all of whose works were jointly written.They were both born in the Lorraine region in the extreme north-east of France and specialised in military and historical fiction and rustic ghost stories.
