In the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secludedglen called Sleepy Hollow, schoolmaster Ichabod Crane arrives to educate the town's children. He fancies the idea of marrying Katrina Van Tassel, the eighteen-year-old daughter of a wealthy farmer, but Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt--the town rowdy--has already set his heart on marrying her. Their romantic rivalry climaxes with the appearance of the legendary Headless Horseman, allegedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who lost his head during the Revolutionary War. And every night he rides out in search of it.
